Pakistan
faces
a
multitude
of
challenges;
almost
20%
of
the
population
lives
in
poverty,
economic
growth
is
very
slow,
large
parts
of
its
population
are
underserved
by
basic
services
such
as
education
and
healthcare,
and
continuing
political
insecurity
hampers
the
government’s
ability
to
effectively
address
the
pressing
needs
of
its
citizens.
Pakistan
has
a
population
of
188
million,
Its
population
continues
to
grow
at
2%
a
year.
Pakistan
will
be
the
sixth
most
populous
country
in
the world by 2020, with a population of at least 220 million people.
Approximately
22
million
live
on
less
than
$1.25
a
day.
50%
of
Pakistan’s
population
lives
in
rural
areas,
and
44%
of
the
country’s
total
labour
force
is
employed
in
the
agricultural
sector.
37%
of
people
in
rural
areas
live
in
extreme
poverty
and
the
poorest
do
not
have
access
to land or agricultural income.
Pakistan
faces
a
severe
demographic
challenge,
since
around
56%
of
its
population
is
less
than
20
years
old.
Currently,
36%
of
Pakistan’s
labour
force
is
aged
between
15
and
24.
This
number
will
rise
to
50%
by
2020.
Half
of
this
youth-bulge
is
lacking
in
either
basic
skills
or
education,
rendering them virtually unemployable.
Pakistan’s
labour
market
has
fundamental
problems
on
both
the
demand
and
supply
side.
On
the
demand
side,
because
of
the
slow
economic
growth,
there
are
not
enough
jobs
to
absorb
the
growing
labour
force.
On
the
supply
side,
the
labour
force
is
not
educated
or
skilled enough to pick up existing jobs.
