Pakistan faces a severe demographic challenge, since around 56% of its population is less than 20 years old. Currently, 36% of Pakistan’s labour force is aged between 15 and 24. This number will rise to 50% by 2020. Half of this youth-bulge is lacking in either basic skills or education, rendering them virtually unemployable. Pakistan’s labour market has fundamental problems on both the demand and supply side. On the demand side, because of the slow economic growth, there are not enough jobs to absorb the growing labour force. On the supply side, the labour force is not educated or skilled enough to pick up existing jobs.
